Northern Virginia Amenities: Wegmans

My personal home is surrounded by grocery stores. Within a small radius there is a Giant, Safeway, Whole Foods, Harris Teeter, and best of all a Wegmans. Wegmans is a combination of all the previously listed grocery stores where it carrier a wide variety of the standard grocery's and then has a large section for take out dining, organic products, and international products. It is hard to find a much better shopping experience than the one at Wegmans.

When Wegmans first moved into Norther Virginia people weren't sure what to make of it. It had the appearance of your standard issue gourmet grocery store that would cost too much and end up being a place only people concerned about the Jones' would shop. The standard issue groceries at Wegmans are priced at a competitive rate with the other stores in the area and there is a larger selection of nearly everything.

Wegmans has almost an entire isle devoted to just pasta. The collection of soups on the other side of the center isle is just as amazing, and Wegmans recently had to add extra beer isles at the front of the store to accommodate the growing selection of craft beers.

Aside from all the standard groceries Wegmans has a cafe that offers a wide variety of different food types. Wegmans has pizza, wings, subs, salads, dim sum, sushi, crab cakes, and meat loaf just to name a small sampling of the varieties of meals that can be obtained to be consumed in the Wegmans cafe.

Close to the cafe is the Wegmans deli and baking section. It is amazing how this is laid out. It is made to look like a street scene in a European country with the small windows and the facade of buildings lining the walls near the ceiling. The fresh baked breads, bagels, cookies, and other treats are on par with what you would expect to find at a stand alone bakery.

The other big advantage Wegmans has over a standard grocery store is the quality of the food they offer. The typical dating on milk from a Safeway or Giant is a couple weeks at best, but Wegmans milk can last for nearly a month. Add to that the quality of the meats and produce and Wegmans truly stands apart from the rest.

As a grocery store it is hard to beat Wegmans when every service they offer is taken into account. There are a number of Wegmans located in the Northern Virginia area. The one closest to myself and my office is located on the corner of Lee Highway and Monument Dr. in Fairfax, Va. The only warning I would offer people is if you are going on the weekend be ready to fight the crowds or make sure to get there before 10:00.
